Black Box by Jennifer Egan

The last issue of the New Yorker was science fiction themed, and featured fiction by Junot Diaz, Johnathan Lethem (Check him out, he’s great. Especially his “Ecstasy of Influence” essay for Harper’s, which is about plagiarism and is completely plagiarised), Jennifer Egan, and Sam Lipsyte. The Egan was a highlight. It was actually published on Twitter and is written in a series of tweets, which I at first thought would just be a gimmick. But Egan actually made it a fundamental part of the structure, as it allows her to tell the story in a series of the protagonist’s thoughts. It’s an interesting narrative device that lets you better inhabit the story and the protagonist’s viewpoint.
